Lucknow Super Giants are enduring a forgettable season in the Indian Premier League 2026, and serious questions are now being raised about the leadership of Rishabh Pant.

LSG are currently languishing at the bottom of the points table with just two wins from nine matches. Alongside the team’s struggles, Pant’s performances — both as a batter and captain — have come under intense scrutiny.

The wicketkeeper-batter, who became the most expensive player in IPL history after being bought for ₹27 crore ahead of the 2025 auction, has failed to live up to expectations. Despite registering a half-century this season, Pant has scored only 204 runs in nine innings in IPL 2026.

His overall numbers for LSG paint a worrying picture — 473 runs in 22 innings at an average of around 25 and a strike rate close to 130. In a format where scoring rates have soared in recent years, his inability to accelerate consistently has drawn criticism.

Behind the stumps too, Pant has not made a significant impact, managing 13 catches and just one stumping during this period. As captain, the lack of results has only added to the pressure.

With LSG’s campaign faltering, the franchise — owned by Sanjiv Goenka — could be forced to consider a leadership change. Goenka has previously been vocal about team performances, especially during difficult phases, which further fuels speculation.

Among the potential replacements, Mitchell Marsh has emerged as a strong contender. The Australian all-rounder has been LSG’s most consistent performer this season, scoring 256 runs in nine innings, including four scores of 40+ in his last five matches. Marsh also brings leadership experience, having captained Australia in 39 T20Is, winning 27 of them.

Another viable option is Aiden Markram, who has scored 224 runs in nine matches despite batting at different positions. Markram has also led South Africa in 46 matches, winning 23, including guiding the team to a runner-up finish in the T20 World Cup 2024 and a semi-final appearance in 2026.

With playoff hopes hanging by a thread, LSG may soon have to make a crucial call — continue backing Pant or hand over the captaincy to a more in-form and experienced leader.
