Stand-in Australia captain Travis Head conceded that his side created unnecessary pressure after suffering a 23-run defeat to Zimbabwe national cricket team in their second match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday.

Chasing 170, Australia were bowled out for 146 in 19.3 overs despite a fighting 65 from Matt Renshaw. Zimbabwe’s pace duo — Blessing Muzarabani (4 wickets) and Brad Evans (3 wickets) — ripped through the top order to script one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

Head admitted that the target was within reach but felt the batting unit failed to capitalise after the bowlers kept Zimbabwe to a chaseable total.

“Yeah, we thought it was a good wicket, but we put ourselves under pressure. We thought it was going to be pretty even throughout the whole contest, and I think it showed that it was.

Although we’d taken only two wickets in our innings, I still felt like it was probably under-par. It came on really well in the second innings. If you gave us that score after winning the toss, I think we would have taken it,” Head said at the post-match presentation.

He added that there wasn’t a specific phase of the game they would look to change.

“I don’t think you look back and say there’s one over here or there that you’d switch around. I felt like we worked through it well and were on a score we’d have been happy to chase.”

Australia’s innings never truly recovered after slumping to 38/4 inside the Powerplay. Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, and Tim David fell cheaply, while Head himself managed just 17.

Glenn Maxwell and Renshaw briefly revived hopes with a 77-run partnership, but regular wickets and mounting scoreboard pressure ultimately derailed the chase.

The defeat leaves Australia searching for answers as Zimbabwe celebrate a famous victory that has shaken up the group standings.
