Pakistan T20I captain Salman Agha has said he will not make any “emotional” decision regarding his leadership after the team’s exit from the Super Eight stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Speaking after Pakistan’s final game, Agha admitted he would take a few days to reflect once the team returns home before deciding on his future as captain.

Disappointing Campaign

It was a tournament to forget for both Pakistan and their skipper. Agha’s captaincy came under scrutiny as Pakistan failed to register wins against stronger sides India and England. His own form compounded the team’s struggles, with the right-hander managing just 60 runs across six innings.

Pakistan still had an outside chance of qualifying for the semifinals but needed to beat Sri Lanka by at least 64 runs. They managed only a narrow five-wicket win, falling well short of the required margin. Agha’s personal outing summed up his tournament — he was dismissed for a two-ball duck.

The result prompted direct questions from reporters about whether he should step down as captain.

“You are absolutely right that I played quite well at number three during the Sri Lanka and Australia series, but I couldn’t deliver the kind of performance in this World Cup that I should have,” Agha admitted.

“Aside from Sahibzada Farhan, I don’t think we performed well as a batting unit throughout the tournament. Regarding the decision on captaincy, any decision made right now would be emotional. We will go back, take a few days, and then whatever decision needs to be made will be made.”

Execution Under Pressure a Major Concern

Agha also pointed to Pakistan’s recurring struggles in ICC tournaments, particularly in high-pressure moments.

“If I had to sum up the entire tournament, I would say we significantly underperformed,” he said. “In the game against Sri Lanka, we played 18 overs very well, but the other team only needed two good overs to capitalize. Our execution in the last three overs wasn’t good with the ball.”

He acknowledged that Pakistan’s bowling unit has delivered better performances in the past but failed to execute when it mattered most.

“You are right that we haven’t reached the semifinals in the last four ICC tournaments. The reason is that we need to learn how to elevate our game under pressure,” he concluded.

With Pakistan’s ICC drought continuing, questions around leadership and team direction are likely to intensify in the coming weeks.
