Lee Fortis Responds After Heated Exchange with Gambhir at The Oval

“It’s quite a big game coming up… It’s not my job to be happy with him (Gambhir) or not. I have never met him before today… You saw what he was like this morning… It’s okay, I’m fine. We have nothing to hide.”

Following a tense on-field spat with India head coach Gautam Gambhir, The Oval’s head groundsman Lee Fortis offered a brief and restrained version of events. Speaking to a group of Indian reporters, Fortis maintained he had “nothing to hide” and downplayed the altercation.

“It’s quite a big game coming up… It’s not my job to be happy with him (Gambhir) or not. I have never met him before today… You saw what he was like this morning… It’s okay, I’m fine. We have nothing to hide.”

When asked to share this side of the story, Lee Fortis had no answer. He’s known for his arrogance and rude behaviour with touring teams. #GautamGambhir will make sure he doesn’t repeat this again, especially with the Indian Cricket Team.

Though he avoided going into detail, some reporters claimed they overheard Fortis referring to Gambhir as “a bit touchy” off the record, a remark he didn’t repeat publicly.

What Sparked the Clash?

The incident occurred during India’s training session ahead of the fifth Test, as bowlers marked their run-ups. Tensions reportedly rose when Gambhir objected to the ground staff’s restriction on approaching the match pitch and took issue with Fortis shouting at staff members for placing an ice cooler on the square.

According to India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, the flashpoint escalated quickly, with Gambhir visibly agitated and pointing fingers at Fortis, who was then escorted away by Kotak while Gambhir continued from a distance.

“Most of the teams know that the curator is not the easiest person to get on with,” Kotak said at a press conference. “And I’m sure you also would be aware of it. So, that gives a lot of answers.”

The exchange, partially captured on video, quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread attention just days before the high-stakes Test at The Oval.
