Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee is set to end in September this year. While the former India pacer is reportedly keen on continuing in the role, speculation over his future has intensified following India’s disappointing white-ball tour of England.
According to a report by Dainik Jagran, the BCCI is considering former India batter VVS Laxman as one of the leading candidates to replace Agarkar if his contract is not renewed.
Laxman currently serves as the Head of Cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru and has played a key role in shaping India’s player development pathway. He has worked closely with the India A and Under-19 teams and also served as the interim head coach during India’s T20I series in Zimbabwe when Gautam Gambhir was unavailable.
However, Agarkar’s extension cannot be ruled out just yet. The upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka is expected to be an important assignment, and reports suggest the former fast bowler is keen to continue in the role until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Since taking charge as chief selector in 2023, Agarkar has overseen one of the most successful phases in Indian cricket. During his tenure, India won three ICC titles—the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
His selection panel has also managed a significant transition across formats, overseeing the retirements of stalwarts such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja, while successfully integrating several promising players from the domestic circuit into the national setup.
Whether the BCCI opts for continuity with Agarkar or ushers in a new era under Laxman is expected to become clear once the selection committee’s tenure concludes in September.
