In a major boost for Chennai Super Kings, veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is reportedly set to undergo a fitness test in the coming days as he continues his recovery from a calf strain ahead of IPL 2026.
According to reports, Dhoni could return as early as CSK’s next fixture against Delhi Capitals at Chepauk, subject to clearing the fitness assessment.
Positive signs but cautious approach
Dhoni has resumed batting in the nets and is said to be experiencing no discomfort. However, the CSK management is taking a cautious route and is unlikely to rush the 44-year-old back into action without full match fitness. He has also not been travelling with the squad during the initial phase of the tournament.
CSK’s struggles without Dhoni
The five-time champions have endured a poor start to IPL 2026, losing all three of their opening matches against:
- Rajasthan Royals
- Punjab Kings
- Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Currently languishing at the bottom of the points table, CSK are among the few teams yet to register a win this season.
More injury concerns
Dhoni isn’t the only absentee troubling CSK. Young South African batter Dewald Brevis has also missed the first three matches due to a side strain. Head coach Stephen Fleming remains hopeful of his return for the upcoming game.
“We hope he is going to be right for the next game. We’ve been conservative, and hopefully, the next few days go as planned,” Fleming said.
Crucial phase ahead
With Dhoni likely in the final phase of his IPL career, his return could be pivotal—not just for results, but also for restoring confidence within the squad. As CSK look to turn their season around, all eyes will be on whether their iconic leader makes a timely comeback.
