Veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami was conspicuous by his absence from Bengal’s second Ranji Trophy 2026-27 fixture against Services at Palam A Stadium in New Delhi, raising questions about why the experienced seamer was not part of the playing XI.
According to RevSportz, Shami was expected to lead Bengal’s bowling attack and had also taken part in the team’s training session on Saturday. While the team management reportedly decided to rest the senior pacer, sources cited by RevSportz claimed that the decision was taken by Shami himself. His brother, Mohammed Kaif, however, featured in Bengal’s playing XI.
Shami’s absence comes shortly after he was overlooked for India’s upcoming all-format tour of New Zealand. Despite his performances in the IPL and domestic cricket, the 36-year-old was not included in any of the squads announced for the tour, which is scheduled to feature five ODIs, five T20Is and two Test matches.
The right-arm pacer has not represented India since the 2025 Champions Trophy final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium. He last played Test cricket in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in London.
What Has Mohammed Shami Said About His Fitness?
Shami has also responded to questions surrounding his fitness and bowling rhythm, saying that outside criticism does not affect his approach to the game.
Speaking about the comments on his performances, Shami said, as quoted by Outlook, “People perhaps enjoy looking and passing comments more. They say the rhythm isn’t there, that he doesn’t look fit, or whatever else. It doesn’t bother me. I’m on the ground, I’m playing, and I’m playing wherever I’m given a chance. The rest is your job. I have stopped making such comments. It makes no difference to me. Now, whoever wants to do whatever, let them. My job is just to play.”
Despite being overlooked for national selection, Shami continues to feature in domestic cricket. His absence from Bengal’s fixture against Services, however, has drawn attention amid the ongoing questions about his role in the Indian team and his future international prospects.
