The India national cricket team are set to face the New Zealand national cricket team in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in Ahmedabad. This will be the fourth time India have reached a T20 World Cup final, having previously won the title in 2007 and 2024.

Heading into the summit clash as defending champions, India will be aiming to lift the trophy for a record third time when they take the field at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Santner’s Pitch Photo Sparks Social Media Buzz

Ahead of the high-voltage final, a photograph of New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner inspecting and taking a picture of the pitch has gone viral on social media.

Interestingly, the image reminded many fans of a similar moment during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Final, when Pat Cummins was seen taking a photo of the pitch at the same venue before Australia defeated India.

The resurfacing of this moment triggered humorous reactions from fans online, with many drawing parallels to the 2023 final played at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Special Prayers Held in Madurai

Meanwhile, fans across the country have been expressing their support for the Indian team in unique ways. In Madurai, a special prayer ceremony was organised seeking victory for India in the World Cup final.

The prayers were conducted at the Sri Maha Periyava Temple in the S.S. Colony area under the auspices of Anushathin Anugraham.

During the ceremony, special abhishekams were performed to the idol of Maha Periyava and the silver padukas using offerings such as turmeric powder, milk, panchamirtham, honey, ghee, tender coconut water, sacred ash (vibhuti), sandalwood and several other items.

The rituals were followed by a special decoration of the deity and a deeparadhana.

Devotees also placed a flex board featuring players of the Indian cricket team and offered prayers for the team’s victory. Many supporters lit lamps and raised slogans of “All the Best India” as they expressed their hopes for the Men in Blue.

India Enter Final as Strong Favourites

India will head into the final with strong momentum after defeating England national cricket team in a thrilling semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium. The win secured India’s place in their fourth Men’s T20 World Cup final — the most by any team in the tournament’s history.

New Zealand, led by Santner, also produced an impressive performance in the semifinals. The Black Caps defeated South Africa national cricket team convincingly at Eden Gardens to reach the final. Opener Finn Allen starred with an unbeaten century to guide his team to victory.

A Closely Contested Rivalry

Over the years, India and New Zealand have faced each other five times in ICC tournament knockout matches. New Zealand hold a slight edge with three wins, while India have won twice.

However, India have emerged victorious in the last two knockout encounters between the sides, giving the hosts a psychological boost heading into the final.

While India aim to defend their title and claim a record third T20 World Cup trophy, New Zealand will be chasing their maiden title in the tournament.

With a packed Narendra Modi Stadium and millions watching around the world, the final promises to be a high-intensity battle between two well-balanced sides.
