Bindyarani Sorokhaibam continued India’s impressive weightlifting campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 by winning a bronze medal in the women’s 58kg category in Glasgow. The Manipuri lifter, who had earlier won silver at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, once again proved why she is one of India’s most consistent weightlifters.
Who is Bindyarani Sorokhaibam?
Born on January 27, 1999, in Imphal, Manipur, Bindyarani comes from a humble family. Her father is a farmer who also runs a grocery shop. She grew up with her brother and sister and developed a passion for sports at an early age.
Interestingly, Bindyarani began her sporting journey in taekwondo, training in the discipline from 2008 to 2012. In 2013, coaches encouraged her to switch to weightlifting after recognising her natural strength and physique, a decision that changed her career.
She started training at the Sports Authority of India’s North Eastern Regional Centre in Imphal before moving to the National Centre of Excellence (NCoE). In 2019, she earned a place in India’s national training camp at SAI Patiala, where she developed into one of the country’s leading weightlifters.
Bindyarani Sorokhaibam’s Career
Bindyarani first came into the spotlight after winning the IWLF Youth National Championships in 2016. She followed it up by claiming gold at the Khelo India Youth Games in 2019, establishing herself as one of India’s brightest young prospects.
Her consistent performances at the national level earned her regular opportunities to represent India internationally, and she has since become a key member of the national weightlifting team.

India has enjoyed an outstanding run in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Mirabai Chanu won India’s first gold medal in the women’s 48kg category with a Commonwealth Games record total of 190kg. Chanambam Rishikanta Singh claimed silver in the men’s 60kg event after setting a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch, while Muthupandi Raja secured silver in the men’s 65kg category. Gyaneshwari Yadav added another silver in the women’s 53kg event before Bindyarani Sorokhaibam continued India’s medal-winning run with a bronze in the women’s 58kg category.
