India are facing fresh fitness concerns in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026, with explosive opener Abhishek Sharma reportedly hospitalised after his condition worsened. The 25-year-old is said to be battling an infection, though his absence has officially been attributed to fever.
According to a report by TimesofIndia.com, Abhishek had a high fever during India’s tournament opener against the USA last Sunday. Despite being unwell, he walked out to open the innings but was dismissed for a golden duck. He did not take the field during the USA’s chase and was also missing from the team dug-out. The report further stated that he was put on a drip for immediate relief.
Abhishek also skipped India’s training session in Delhi on Tuesday, raising doubts over his availability for the upcoming group-stage clash against Namibia.
Providing an update, India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said,
“Abhi still has a few issues with his tummy. We are hopeful he’ll be available for the game in two days’ time. We’re waiting on his fitness more than anything, and that will open up a few different combinations.”
Meanwhile, there is positive news regarding Jasprit Bumrah, who is expected to return for Thursday’s match against Namibia. Bumrah missed the USA game due to illness but has resumed bowling in the nets.
“Booms will bowl today as well. He’s been about ten days without bowling, but he’s feeling a lot better and moving better. We’ll see how training goes today and tomorrow and then finalise the team,” Ten Doeschate added.
India had earlier dealt with fitness concerns surrounding Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana, and Abhishek’s situation now adds to the team’s growing injury list at a crucial stage of the tournament.
