Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has applied for the vacant position on the BCCI men’s selection committee. If appointed, he could replace Ajit Agarkar as the chairman of selectors, although the Board is reportedly considering retaining Pragyan Ojha in the role.
Agarkar, who represented the West Zone on the selection committee, served as chairman for the past two years. His contract expired earlier this month, and both he and the Board decided against renewing it. The decision comes with India having just over a year to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Agarkar’s departure reportedly followed a breakdown in his relationship with the BCCI over the selection of Rohit Sharma.
South Zone representative Pragyan Ojha is currently serving as the interim chairman of selectors. The former India spinner played 24 Tests for the country. According to PTI, there is strong support within the BCCI for retaining Ojha as chairman.
If the Board decides to continue with Ojha, Jaffer may miss out on the position, while another candidate, Powar, could benefit from the development.
Wasim Jaffer Rated Ajit Agarkar’s Tenure 7/10
Since retiring from professional cricket, Jaffer has taken up coaching roles with state teams, IPL franchises and international sides, including Bangladesh. He also runs a YouTube channel and works as a cricket pundit.
In a recent YouTube video, Jaffer rated Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of selectors a seven out of 10. He praised India’s success in white-ball cricket during Agarkar’s tenure but felt the former India pacer could have handled certain situations better. Jaffer also criticised Agarkar over Virat Kohli’s early retirement from Test cricket.
“We have done very well in white-ball cricket. We won two World Cups, the Asia Cup, and the Champions Trophy. So we have won trophies. I would give him 7 marks out of 10. I think how he handled some people could have been better,” Jaffer said.
