India batting star Virat Kohli has paid tribute to veteran actor Nana Patekar, describing him as a “true legend of Indian cinema” and remembering his immense contribution to the film industry.
Patekar passed away at the age of 75 at his residence in Goa early Thursday morning after suffering a severe cardiac arrest.
Kohli took to social media to express his condolences and said the actor’s work and legacy would continue to be remembered for generations.
“A true legend of Indian cinema. His work and legacy will live on for generations. Rest in peace, Nana Patekar ji. Om Shanti,” Kohli wrote.
Patekar enjoyed a long and influential career in Indian cinema, with acclaimed performances across Hindi and Marathi films. Known for his intense acting style and distinctive screen presence, he portrayed a wide range of characters during his career.
His work earned him several major honours, while his performances continued to connect with audiences across generations.
Patekar was taken to a private hospital after he was found unconscious at his apartment in Dona Paula, near Panaji. Dr Shekhar Salkar, a senior doctor at the medical facility, said the actor was administered CPR for 45 minutes but could not be revived. He was declared dead at 5:10 am.
Patekar’s last rites will be performed at his farmhouse in Pune, Maharashtra, on Thursday.
“The mortal remains will be brought (to Pune) by around 5 pm, and later will be kept for the last ‘darshan’. The last rites will be performed on the premises of his farmhouse,” said Ganesh Thorat, CEO of Patekar’s Naam Foundation, which works for water conservation.
Born Vishwanath Patekar into a Marathi family in Murud-Janjira in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, the actor went on to become one of the most recognised names in Indian cinema.
He is survived by his wife and son, Malhar.
