Former India pacer Varun Aaron has been appointed as the new bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, the franchise announced on Monday (July 14). The 35-year-old from Jharkhand had retired from professional cricket earlier this year.
Known for his raw pace in the 2010s, Aaron represented India in 18 matches (9 Tests, 9 ODIs), picking up 29 wickets. He also featured in nine IPL seasons (2011–2022), turning out for five franchises and bagging 44 wickets at an economy of 8.93.
This will be Aaron’s first major coaching role, having recently transitioned into commentary.
Sunrisers, who were runners-up in IPL 2024, endured a disappointing sixth-place finish in 2025. Despite scoring the season’s highest total (286/6 vs Rajasthan Royals), they struggled with consistency in their bowling attack.
Aaron replaces James Franklin, who served as bowling coach for the past two seasons. The former New Zealand all-rounder will now take on a new role within the franchise.
