The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been a stage where cricket meets big business. Over the years, franchises have not hesitated to spend massive amounts to secure players who can change games single-handedly. With each auction, records are broken, reflecting the growing value of elite T20 talent.

Here’s a detailed look at the top 10 most expensive players in IPL auction history, featuring some of the biggest names in world cricket.

Mitchell Starc leads the list

At the top sits Mitchell Starc, who became the most expensive player in IPL history when he was bought for ₹24.75 crore by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2024 auction. The left-arm pacer’s ability to deliver in both powerplay and death overs made him a prized asset.

Premium price for world-class all-rounders

Just behind him is Pat Cummins, picked up for ₹20.50 crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad. A World Cup-winning captain, Cummins offers both leadership and all-round skills.

England’s Sam Curran also commanded a huge ₹18.50 crore deal with Punjab Kings, thanks to his proven match-winning ability in crunch situations.

Similarly, Cameron Green was snapped up by Mumbai Indians for ₹17.50 crore, underlining the premium placed on young all-rounders.

Big-money match-winners

Ben Stokes joined Chennai Super Kings for ₹16.25 crore, reflecting his reputation as a big-match player.

South Africa’s Chris Morris was earlier the most expensive IPL player when Rajasthan Royals bought him for ₹16.25 crore in 2021.

Explosive West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran also fetched ₹16 crore from Lucknow Super Giants, highlighting the demand for power-hitters in T20 cricket.

Indian stars also in demand

Among Indian players, Yuvraj Singh was one of the earliest big buys, going for ₹16 crore to Delhi Daredevils in 2015.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan attracted ₹15.25 crore from Mumbai Indians, while swing bowler Deepak Chahar was bought back by Chennai Super Kings for ₹14 crore.
