The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed The Oval in London as the venue for the 2027 ICC World Test Championship Final, which will be played from June 9 to 13, 2027.
This will be the second time The Oval hosts the WTC final, having previously staged the 2023 summit clash, where Australia defeated India by 209 runs to claim the second edition of the championship.
“The 2027 World Test Championship Final will hold special significance as cricket celebrates 150 years of Test cricket. The Oval has played a proud role in the history of our sport and has hosted some of its most memorable moments. We look forward to working closely with the ECB to deliver another world-class event that celebrates the enduring legacy of Test cricket and creates lasting memories for fans around the world,” ICC General Manager, Events & Operations, Gaurav Saxena said in a statement.
The 2027 final will also mark the third consecutive time that England hosts the WTC final. The ICC has already confirmed that England and Wales will continue to stage the marquee event until 2031, citing favourable summer weather conditions as a key reason for the decision.
“We are honoured to be staging the next three ICC World Test Championship Finals in England and Wales, and we’re pleased to confirm that The Oval will play host again next year. The 2023 final at The Oval was a huge hit with broadcasters and fans, and I’ve no doubt that next year’s event will be extra special again,” said Neil Snowball, Managing Director of Competitions and Major Events at the England and Wales Cricket Board.
WTC 2025-27 standings
With less than a year remaining in the current WTC cycle, Australia lead the standings with a points percentage of 87.50, having won seven of their eight Tests so far.
South Africa, the defending champions, are second with 75%, followed by New Zealand on 72.22%.
Bangladesh have moved into contention at fourth place with 58.33% after completing a 2-0 series sweep against Pakistan in May.
India, who have finished runners-up in two previous WTC finals, are currently fifth with 48.15%, after winning four of their nine Tests in the cycle. Sri Lanka are just behind on 41.67%.
India’s qualification hopes
India, who have fond memories of The Oval from several memorable Test victories, will travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series beginning on August 15.
However, Shubman Gill’s side faces a steep challenge to qualify for the 2027 WTC final, particularly after suffering a damaging home whitewash against South Africa. India will need a remarkable turnaround in their remaining matches to keep their hopes of reaching a third successive WTC final alive.
