India batter Shreyas Iyer is recovering well after undergoing minor surgery for a spleen injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia at the SCG last week. Cricbuzz has confirmed that the 30-year-old has made a full recovery and remains stable, with no cause for concern.
According to sources close to Iyer, the injury occurred when he dived forward to complete a catch on the run, resulting in an awkward fall that ruptured his spleen. He was immediately taken for medical evaluation, and doctors decided on a minor surgical procedure to treat the injury.
While the surgery went smoothly, Iyer has been advised to rest for at least five to seven more days. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian team management have been closely monitoring his condition through Dr. Rizwan Khan, the team physician in Australia. Arrangements are also being made for a member of Iyer’s family to travel to Sydney.
As of Tuesday, Iyer has been in good spirits — taking phone calls, eating home-cooked meals provided by friends, and managing light daily activities on his own.
Teammate and India T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav shared an encouraging update from Canberra:
“We spoke to him the first day we got to know about the injury. I called the physio and was told he was stable. He’s been talking to everyone, replying to messages — that’s a great sign. He said he’ll take care of himself for a few more days, but he’s doing fine.”
Later on Tuesday, the BCCI issued an official statement confirming that Iyer’s condition was stable and improving.
“His injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. A repeat scan done on October 28 has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress,” the board said.
Iyer is expected to remain in Sydney under observation for a few more days before resuming light training once cleared by the medical team.
