Salman Agha Captaincy Under Threat? PCB Likely to Make Major Changes After T20 World Cup Exit

Pakistan’s shocking early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has put Salman Ali Agha’s captaincy under serious scrutiny, with the Pakistan Cricket Board reportedly preparing big changes to the team leadership and structure.

Agha’s leadership came under fire throughout the World Cup, as Pakistan failed to secure wins against stronger opponents and exited at the Super Eight stage. Coupled with his own poor form — scoring only 60 runs in six innings — pressure has rapidly mounted on his position as captain.

Mixed Campaign, Rising Frustration

Pakistan’s campaign had promising moments, including a century from Sahibzada Farhan and an 84-run contribution from Fakhar Zaman, but those individual efforts weren’t enough to cover inconsistencies across the side. In their must-win clash against Sri Lanka national cricket team, Pakistan needed to restrict the hosts to 147 or fewer to qualify — a target they missed, sealing their elimination.

Agha’s personal failure with the bat — dismissed for a two-ball duck — didn’t help his case and amplified the calls for leadership change.

Reports Suggest PCB Preparing a Shake-Up

According to ESPNcricinfo and PTI reports, the PCB hierarchy, led by chairman Mohsin Naqvi, is ready to make significant decisions regarding the T20 leadership setup after the tournament.

Sources indicate that Agha could be removed as captain regardless of how Pakistan finished their World Cup campaign. The PCB is considering alternatives, with leg-spinner Shadab Khan and pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi among the potential replacements.

However, both options pose their own questions:

  • Shadab Khan has led Pakistan in a handful of matches but with mixed results.
  • Shaheen Afridi was previously appointed T20 captain in 2024 but was removed after a series defeat to New Zealand national cricket team.

Veterans Also in the Spotlight

Reports also suggest that senior batters like Babar Azam and Usman Khan might see their T20I careers curtailed as part of a broader rebuild.

Babar, the highest run-scorer in T20 internationals globally, has faced criticism for not adapting swiftly to the power-hitting demands of modern T20 cricket — a format that increasingly values high strike rates and big-hitting ability.

Should the PCB opt for a fresh start, some seasoned campaigners might be phased out in favour of younger, more dynamic talent.

Coaching and Structural Overhaul Likely Too

It is also understood that head coach Mike Hesson, despite his work with Pakistan over the past few years, could be assessed closely in light of the team’s repeated inability to progress in major ICC events.

Pakistan have now missed the T20 World Cup semifinals in successive editions (2024 and 2026), prompting calls from fans and pundits alike for a revamped approach.

Pressure Mounts After Another ICC Disappointment

With expectations always sky-high for a team of Pakistan’s calibre, another early exit has brought leadership questions to the forefront. Whether the PCB opts for continuity or a clean slate, changes appear imminent.

For now, Salman Agha remains Pakistan’s captain — but his position is far from secure as the board prepares to make decisions that could reshape the team’s T20 future.
