Sanju Samson showered praise on his opening partner Abhishek Sharma, describing their batting combination as “fire and fire” after the duo played a key role in India’s triumphant campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The aggressive opening pair delivered several impactful performances throughout the tournament, helping India national cricket team dominate opposition attacks on their way to lifting the title.

“We Are Fire and Fire” – Samson on His Partnership With Abhishek

Speaking at the India Today Conclave, Samson explained how the understanding between him and Abhishek Sharma has developed naturally over the last couple of years.

“We are not ice and fire, we are fire and fire. Sometimes he fires, sometimes I do. We have that kind of combination going. We have done this since 2024; we have a Kerala–Punjabi friendship in the middle,” Samson said.

The wicketkeeper-batter added that communication between the two is simple and effective.

“Everything comes pretty naturally to us, so we do not complicate it. He asks me, ‘How is the ball coming?’ I tell him that the ball is coming normally, and hit it for a six. It is really simple with him.”

Samson also praised Abhishek’s temperament and character.

“Abhishek is very brave and collected. I love his character. I really love the partnership with him on and off the field.”

Match-Winning Opening Stand in the Final

The pair delivered a brilliant opening stand in the final against New Zealand national cricket team, putting the opposition bowlers under immense pressure.

Samson and Abhishek added 98 runs for the first wicket, giving India a flying start during the powerplay. Their explosive partnership helped India post a massive 255-run total in the summit clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

India eventually defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to lift the trophy.

India Create T20 World Cup History

With the victory, India created history by winning a record-breaking third T20 World Cup title and becoming the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup while hosting the tournament.

The win further cemented India’s dominance in the shortest format of the game.

Samson’s Remarkable Comeback Tournament

For Sanju Samson, the tournament marked a remarkable comeback. The right-handed batter overcame earlier struggles with inconsistency and limited opportunities to emerge as India’s leading run-scorer in the tournament.

Samson scored 321 runs in five innings, averaging 80.25 with an incredible strike rate of 199.37. His tally included 27 fours and 24 sixes, and he finished as the third-highest run-scorer of the tournament.

His run of form included crucial half-centuries from the virtual quarterfinal against West Indies national cricket team to the final against New Zealand.

Abhishek Sharma Overcomes Early Struggles

While Samson thrived throughout the tournament, Abhishek Sharma had a difficult start. The young opener endured a tough phase early in the competition, registering three consecutive ducks.

Despite the setbacks, Abhishek bounced back in the most important match of the tournament.

In the final, he played a match-defining knock of 52 runs off just 21 balls, smashing six fours and three sixes to provide India with a blistering start after being asked to bat first.

Reflecting on his struggles, Abhishek admitted it was difficult to deal with the poor start but stressed that his ultimate aim is to help India win major trophies.

“It is not easy to digest. I had a plan; the only goal was to win ICC trophies for the country. Going through this tournament, it was not the start I wanted. But the team was doing well,” he said.

“My dream was to win the tournament. My goal is not to win only one tournament, but many.”

A Promising Opening Pair for India

The Samson–Abhishek partnership has quickly become one of India’s most exciting opening combinations in T20 cricket. Their fearless batting approach and natural chemistry at the crease have given India explosive starts at the top of the order.

If their performances in the T20 World Cup 2026 are any indication, the “fire and fire” duo could play a crucial role in India’s success in upcoming global tournaments.
