Pakistan WTC Final Qualification Scenario: Pakistan’s World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign has come to an end as far as qualification for the final is concerned after their eight-wicket defeat to England in the third Test at Edgbaston on Saturday (September 12).
The result completed a 3-0 series whitewash for England and left Pakistan at the bottom of the WTC standings. Despite having four Tests still remaining in the current cycle, Pakistan are now mathematically out of contention for a place in the 2027 World Test Championship Final.
England were set a target of 130 after Pakistan staged a remarkable fightback in their second innings. The hosts, however, overcame an early wobble to complete a comfortable eight-wicket victory and wrap up a series sweep.
England survive early scare to complete 130-run chase
Chasing 130 for victory, England suffered a dramatic start as Pakistan new-ball bowler Mohammad Abbas dismissed Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay for ducks in the opening over.
The hosts were suddenly reduced to 2/2, giving Pakistan a glimmer of hope after their impressive fightback with the bat.
However, Joe Root and Jordan Cox ensured there was no further damage.
Root survived a couple of scares before settling into his innings. The former England captain brought up his half-century from 57 balls, while Cox reached his fifty shortly afterwards.
The pair then took complete control of the chase, adding an unbeaten 128-run partnership from just 143 deliveries.
Root remained unbeaten on 62, while Cox finished not out on 59, as England reached the target in the 25th over to seal an eight-wicket win and complete a 3-0 series victory.
Pakistan knocked out of WTC Final race
The defeat has officially ended Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the 2027 WTC Final.
Pakistan have played nine Tests in the 2025-27 cycle, winning only two and losing seven. They have also been hit by eight penalty points, which have further weakened their position in the standings.
Pakistan currently have 16 points from nine matches and a points percentage (PCT) of just 14.81%, leaving them ninth and last among the teams in the current WTC standings.
The top two teams at the end of the league stage qualify for the WTC Final. Pakistan’s current position means even a perfect finish in their remaining matches would not be enough to lift them into the top two.
Can Pakistan still improve their WTC position?
Yes, but they can no longer qualify for the final.
Pakistan have four Tests remaining in the current WTC cycle. They are scheduled to play Sri Lanka at home before hosting New Zealand in another two-Test series.
If Pakistan win all four remaining matches, they can still improve their final points percentage. However, their maximum possible PCT would be only 41.03%, which is no longer sufficient to keep them in contention for one of the top two spots.
Therefore, while Pakistan can still move up the WTC table by winning their remaining Tests, their campaign for a place in the 2027 final is mathematically over.

How does WTC Final qualification work?
The World Test Championship Final is contested by the top two teams in the points-percentage table at the end of the league stage.
Unlike a traditional points table, the WTC uses points percentage (PCT) to determine the rankings. Teams receive points for wins and draws, while penalties for slow over-rates can reduce their total.
The top two teams at the end of the 2025-27 cycle will qualify for the final, scheduled to be played in June 2027.
Pakistan’s poor record in the current cycle, combined with their eight-point deduction, has left them too far behind. Even winning all four of their remaining Tests would take them only as high as 41.03%, confirming that they cannot finish in the top two.
For Pakistan, the focus now shifts from qualification to rebuilding. Their remaining Tests against Sri Lanka and New Zealand will still be important as they look to improve their position and end a disappointing WTC campaign on a stronger note.
