Chennai Super Kings could be without their talisman MS Dhoni for a significant phase of Indian Premier League 2026, with the veteran wicketkeeper-batter currently recovering from a calf strain.
Dhoni, who underwent over a month of intense training to prepare for the season, is now dealing with the setback after returning to competitive cricket following nearly a year-long break. The 44-year-old has retired from all formats of international cricket and continues to feature only in the IPL.
Extended Absence Likely
While CSK have officially confirmed that Dhoni will miss at least two weeks, a report by The Times of India suggests the absence could stretch longer. The five-time title-winning skipper may sit out up to six matches, with his return potentially delayed until the final week of April.
This also puts his participation in CSK’s high-profile clash against Mumbai Indians in serious doubt.
‘Big Blow’ for CSK
A senior CSK official acknowledged the impact of Dhoni’s absence, calling it a major setback for the team.
“It is definitely a big blow for us and we’ll have to deal with it. He is taking rest, and we want him back as soon as possible,” the official said.
Leadership Void and Team Balance
Dhoni’s absence not only weakens CSK’s lower-middle order but also leaves a leadership vacuum, given his vast experience and tactical acumen. His presence behind the stumps has long been a guiding force for the team, especially in crunch situations.
With a long tournament ahead, CSK will now need to find the right balance and adapt quickly in order to stay competitive until their iconic finisher returns.
