It is never easy to stand out on a cricket field, but earning recognition from one of the finest spinners of the modern era is perhaps the ultimate endorsement. For India’s newest Test debutant, Manav Suthar, that validation arrived even before he donned the Test cap.

On June 6, 2026, the 23-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner from Rajasthan became India’s 319th Test cricketer when he received his maiden Test cap from Kuldeep Yadav ahead of the one-off Test against Afghanistan National Cricket Team at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.

The occasion was significant for another reason too. It marked a rare instance of India playing a home Test without both Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the playing XI — something that had not happened in nearly 15 years.

Yet Ashwin’s presence was still felt, albeit from afar.

Back in April 2026, the legendary off-spinner had shared a screenshot of Suthar’s bowling figures on social media, explaining why the youngster was so highly rated.

“The reason why Manav Suthar is rated very highly is crystal clear in this picture. It’s not just the angle of rotation or overspin, it’s also the speed at which it is rotating. He has a distinct advantage alongside Harsh Dubey in this regard.”

On Day 2 of the Test, Suthar gave everyone a glimpse of exactly what Ashwin had seen in him.

Introduced into the attack by captain Shubman Gill shortly before tea, the young spinner struck with just his fourth delivery in Test cricket. He dismissed Afghanistan opener Abdul Malik, who top-edged a sweep and was caught by Mohammed Siraj at second slip.

Suthar continued to impress in the final session, removing the dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz and later dismissing Afsar Zazai to cap a dream start to his Test career.

With three wickets to his name and an economy rate below two runs per over, Suthar’s impressive debut quickly drew another reaction from Ashwin, who reposted his earlier assessment with a fitting caption:

“He makes his debut and continues to paint the canvas with the red ball.”

Who is Manav Suthar?

Hailing from Sri Ganganagar, Suthar learned the game through street cricket before making his way into Rajasthan’s domestic setup. He announced himself in First-Class cricket by claiming 39 wickets in a single Ranji Trophy season and steadily established a reputation as one of the country’s most promising young spinners.

His Test debut also ended a 12-year wait for Rajasthan, making him only the fifth cricketer from the state to represent India in Test cricket.

More than just a bowler, Suthar is regarded as a genuine all-round prospect, having already scored a First-Class century. Judging by his memorable debut performance, the youngster is already beginning to justify the faith shown in him by some of the biggest names in Indian cricket.
