Ishan Kishan blended raw power with exquisite timing to craft a stunning half-century before Jasprit Bumrah ripped through Pakistan’s top order, guiding India to a commanding 61-run victory and a Super Eight berth in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday.

On a challenging surface at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Kishan’s explosive 77 off just 40 balls proved decisive. After being asked to bat first, India posted a competitive 175 for seven — a total that looked even more imposing given the sluggish nature of the pitch. It was one of the finest T20I knocks by an Indian batter in difficult conditions.

Bumrah, Pandya Blow Away Pakistan

Chasing 176, Pakistan needed a strong Power Play to stay in contention. Instead, they were blown away by India’s pace duo. Jasprit Bumrah (2/17) and Hardik Pandya (2/16) dismantled the top order, removing Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, and Salman Ali Agha in quick succession.

Pandya set the tone in the opening over, forcing Farhan to sky a sharp bouncer to Rinku Singh. Then came Bumrah’s masterclass. Ayub was trapped in front by a searing inswinging yorker, while Agha mistimed a back-of-length delivery straight to mid-wicket. Pakistan slumped to 13 for three and never recovered.

When Babar Azam’s attempted slog sweep off Axar Patel resulted in his stumps being shattered, Pakistan were 34 for four. Their Power Play yielded 38 for four compared to India’s 52 for one — a gap that only widened as the innings progressed.

Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Tilak Varma, and Varun Chakravarthy tightened the screws in the middle overs as Pakistan were bowled out for 114. With this win, India extended their dominance over Pakistan in T20 World Cups to 8-1.

Kishan’s Controlled Carnage

Earlier, Kishan dominated proceedings in an 87-run partnership for the second wicket with Tilak Varma. Despite the pitch offering grip and variable bounce, the left-hander played with authority.

He announced his intent with a fierce pull shot off Shaheen Shah Afridi that sailed into the mid-wicket stands. Pakistan’s spinners then bore the brunt of his assault. Salman Ali Agha and Ayub were driven for boundaries, while Abrar Ahmed conceded a six and a four in quick succession.

One late cut off Abrar stood out — a shot that combined balance, wristwork, and placement on a surface not conducive to strokeplay. Kishan reached his fifty in just 27 balls, a remarkable feat given the conditions and the opposition.

Tilak, though steady, played second fiddle during the stand. Kishan’s aggressive approach eventually led to his downfall when he attempted to clear mid-wicket off Ayub but was bowled.

Late Momentum Shift, But India Finish Strong

Pakistan briefly clawed back as Ayub struck twice in the 15th over, dismissing Tilak (25) and Hardik Pandya off consecutive deliveries to reduce India from 126 for two to 126 for four.

Suryakumar Yadav (32 off 28) and Shivam Dube (27 off 17) added valuable runs, though neither could fully accelerate. Usman Tariq removed Suryakumar in the 19th over, but Shaheen Afridi’s expensive final over — which yielded 15 runs — pushed India firmly into the 170-plus zone.

In the end, that total proved far beyond Pakistan’s reach. Kishan laid the foundation, Bumrah delivered the knockout blow, and India marched confidently into the Super Eight stage with one of their most emphatic wins over their arch-rivals.
