When India and Pakistan lock horns in an ICC Under-19 World Cup Super Six clash at the Queens Sports Club on Sunday, bragging rights will be secondary to what is truly at stake — a place in the semi-finals.

While the rivalry remains one of the fiercest in world cricket, this encounter carries far greater consequences for Pakistan, who find themselves in a must-win situation as the tournament reaches its decisive phase.

The Under-19 World Cup, a proven launchpad for future stars, is now entering its business end. Of the 12 teams that progressed to the Super Six stage, five are already out of contention, with the battle intensifying for the remaining semi-final spots.

Group 2 Scenario Explained

From Group 1, defending champions Australia, along with Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies, are fighting for knockout berths. In Group 2, the race is tighter, with India, England and Pakistan competing for just two semi-final places.

India and England currently sit at the top of Group 2 with six points each, but Ayush Mhatre-led India hold the edge due to a superior net run-rate (NRR). Pakistan, on four points, remain in the hunt but need results to go their way.

Each of the three contenders has one Super Six match left. While England face New Zealand on January 30, the high-voltage India vs Pakistan clash will be played on February 1.

What Pakistan Need to Qualify

Scenario 1: England beat New Zealand

England would then secure a semi-final spot, turning India vs Pakistan into a virtual knockout.

  • India qualify with either a win or a washout
  • Pakistan must win — and by a huge margin
Even then, Pakistan’s task is daunting, as India’s towering NRR of 3.337 gives them a massive cushion.

Scenario 2: England lose to New Zealand

This opens the door wider for Pakistan.

  • India win or no result → Pakistan eliminated
  • Pakistan win big → England could be knocked out
  • A massive Pakistan victory could even threaten India’s qualification, though anything short of a dominant win would see India and England progress.
