Powerplay Crucial in India–Pakistan T20 World Cup Clash, Says Aaron Finch

Maximising the batting Powerplay will be key in deciding the high-voltage India–Pakistan clash at the T20 World Cup in Colombo, according to former Australia captain Aaron Finch.

The last time the two sides met in a major tournament, India defeated Pakistan three times — including in the final — to lift the Asia Cup in the UAE. Defending champions India national cricket team currently top Group A and are ahead of Pakistan national cricket team on Net Run Rate. They head into the Colombo clash on the back of a dominant 93-run win over Namibia, during which Ishan Kishan’s 61 powered India to 86 runs in the Powerplay — the highest six-over total of the tournament so far.

Speaking at the JioStar Media Day, Finch highlighted the importance of making the most of the first six overs, especially in Sri Lankan conditions.

“Yes, particularly in Sri Lanka, where the wickets are a bit slower and turning more, you have to maximise those first six overs. We saw Ishan and Sanju get off to a flyer the other night.

“You understand the importance of that because it can be harder to score through the middle overs and towards the backend. So, wickets in hand are crucial, and having a set batter at the crease is equally important. New batters can find it difficult to clear the ropes early in their innings.”

Finch pointed out that conditions in Colombo are very different from batting-friendly venues in India such as Arun Jaitley Stadium, where smaller boundaries allow batters to clear the ropes more easily.

“This will take tactical thinking, and the teams that adapt quickest generally succeed in these conditions. India have plenty of experience. They’ve got left-right combinations and players who can operate at different tempos and in different roles — as do Pakistan. I can’t wait for this game,” he added.

Finch, who captained Australia to the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup title, also predicted that Pakistan’s spinners could pose a serious challenge to India’s batters.

“When you come to Colombo, you have to change your thought process compared to playing in India, where grounds are smaller and wickets are flatter, especially through the middle overs. In Australia’s win over Ireland, they ran 22 twos. They applied pressure in a different way.

“You have to adjust your mindset. You probably need to target specific match-ups rather than going after every bowler. On bigger grounds, even slight mishits can result in catches because there’s so much space and larger boundaries,” Finch explained.

With conditions expected to favour spinners and tactical batting, the Powerplay battle could well shape the outcome of this marquee encounter.
