Essex cricketer Robin Das, who has Bangladeshi origins, has been charged with two counts of rape and is due to appear at the Inner London Crown Court on October 9.
The 24-year-old batter was arrested in August 2025 and was subsequently released on bail. He was charged on July 23, 2026, following an investigation into a report of a woman being raped in Brixton on March 30, 2024.
The Metropolitan Police said: “Robin Das of Queens Road, Waltham Forest, was charged on 23 July 2026 with two counts of rape. The charges follow his arrest on 27 August 2025, following reports of a woman being raped in Brixton on 30 March 2024. The woman continues to be supported by specialist officers.”
Das has represented Essex in nine first-class matches and 29 List A games. His most recent appearance came on July 21 in the One-Day Cup, when he scored 29 runs. He was charged two days later and has not played for the county since.
Essex, who were scheduled to face Glamorgan on Thursday, confirmed that a contracted member of their playing staff had recently appeared in court but did not identify the player in their statement.
“Essex County Cricket Club can confirm that a male member of the playing staff, currently under contract with the club, recently appeared in court in relation to an incident that took place outside club activities,” the county said.
The charges against Das are allegations and have not been proven in court.
Alex Hepburn case
The development comes years after former Worcestershire all-rounder Alex Hepburn was charged with two counts of rape in 2017. He was convicted of rape in 2019 and sentenced to five years in prison.
After his release, Hepburn approached Oswestry Cricket Club about training or playing for the team, but the club’s committee voted against the proposal. He did not return to professional cricket.
In September 2024, the Cricket Discipline Commission imposed a 10-year ban on Hepburn from playing cricket in England and Wales. The suspension was backdated to October 30, 2021, the date of his release
