In cricket, a debut is more than just the start of a career — it’s a statement. Some players take years to settle in, while others announce themselves in spectacular fashion from the very first game. Over the years, the sport has witnessed several dream debuts where cricketers made an instant impact and etched their names into the history books.

Here’s a look at some of the most memorable debut performances:

Sourav Ganguly – 131 vs England (1996)

When Sourav Ganguly walked out at Lord’s for his Test debut, expectations were high but few could have predicted the fairytale that followed. The left-hander scored a fluent 131, becoming only the third cricketer to hit a century on debut at the iconic venue. That innings marked the rise of one of India’s greatest captains.

Narendra Hirwani – 16 wickets vs West Indies (1988)

Narendra Hirwani’s debut is the stuff of legends. Playing against the mighty West Indies in Chennai, the young leg-spinner took 16 wickets for just 136 runs, still the best figures ever by a bowler on Test debut. Though his career didn’t reach great heights later, that match remains unforgettable.

Lawrence Rowe – 214 & 100 vs New Zealand (1972)

For West Indies’ Lawrence Rowe, one innings wasn’t enough. On his debut against New Zealand in Kingston, he scored 214 in the first innings and an unbeaten 100 in the second — a record-setting double century and century in the same match on debut.

Kyle Mayers – 210* vs Bangladesh (2021)

In modern cricket, Kyle Mayers’ debut is already considered legendary. Chasing 395 against Bangladesh in Chattogram, the left-hander played a breathtaking knock of 210 not out, guiding West Indies to a historic victory. It was the highest fourth-innings score by a debutant in Test history.

Shikhar Dhawan – 187 vs Australia (2013)

Shikhar Dhawan announced himself in style with a whirlwind 187 off 174 balls against Australia in Mohali. His aggressive stroke play and fearless batting gave India the upper hand and made it one of the most dominating debuts by an opener.

Fakhar Zaman – 114 vs India (2017 Champions Trophy Final)

Few debuts are bigger than in a tournament final against your fiercest rivals. Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman made his ODI debut series in the 2017 Champions Trophy, and in the final against India, he produced a match-winning 114 that stunned the cricketing world and sealed Pakistan’s historic triumph.
