KL Rahul became one of the biggest talking points of the Maharaja T20 League Auction, but not for the reason many expected. Instead of emerging as one of the most sought-after players, the India wicketkeeper-batter went unsold despite entering the auction with a base price of ₹2 lakh.
Given Rahul’s stature and his impressive IPL 2026 campaign, his name not attracting a single bid came as a surprise to many. However, the reason behind the outcome had little to do with cricketing ability.
With the Maharaja T20 League scheduled to begin on June 20, Rahul is understood to be unavailable for the tournament because of his commitments with the Indian team. As a result, franchises chose not to spend one of their slots on a player who would not be available for the competition.
A video from the auction room has since gone viral on social media. The footage shows the auctioneer waiting for bids after Rahul’s name was announced, but none of the teams raised their paddles, leaving the star batter unsold.
The clip triggered a flood of reactions online. While some users labelled the moment as embarrassing for Rahul, others pointed out that his unavailability was the key reason behind the decision. Several fans also noted that judging the outcome without considering the scheduling clash was unfair.
Some social media users even questioned why Rahul entered the auction despite knowing he would be unavailable, suggesting the situation could have been avoided altogether.
Why Is KL Rahul Unavailable?
Rahul is currently tied up with national commitments. He is part of India’s squad for the ODI series against Afghanistan, which runs until June 20. Following that assignment, he is expected to continue preparing for India’s ODI tour of England, which begins in July.
With a busy international calendar ahead, Rahul is likely to focus on national duties and workload management, making participation in the Maharaja T20 League impossible this season.
