WWE SmackDown Results and Highlights (September 11): The latest episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown took place live from Mexico City, with four titles on the line during an action-packed night.
The biggest moment came in the main event as Sami Zayn defeated CM Punk to become the new WWE Undisputed Champion. Meanwhile, tag-team partners R-Truth and Damian Priest suffered a major setback after losing to The War Raiders, with Priest turning on Truth after the match.
Here is a look at all the matches and major moments from the Mexico City episode.
Randy Orton issues open challenge
Randy Orton opened the show by addressing his victory over Cody Rhodes at Sunday Night’s Main Event. The Viper praised Rhodes as a good man, husband and friend but made it clear that he does not consider him a ‘Legend Killer’ like himself.
Orton then issued an open challenge to both CM Punk and Sami Zayn as he continues his pursuit of a 15th World Championship.
Rey Fenix retains AAA Cruiserweight Championship
Crowd favourite Rey Fenix successfully defended his AAA Cruiserweight Championship against Ricky Saints.
Saints was heavily booed by the Mexico City crowd throughout the match, even when he had control of the contest. Fenix survived two Revolution DDTs before retaining his title after hitting the MMB.
Nikki Bella defeats Paige
In the only non-title match of the night, Nikki Bella defeated Paige.
Paige showed more aggression during the contest, with the action eventually spilling outside the ring. However, once the two returned inside, Bella caught Paige with a roll-up and used the ropes for leverage to secure the victory.
Chelsea Green retains WWE Women’s Championship
Chelsea Green defended her WWE Women’s Championship against Nia Jax.
Green received strong support from the local crowd as she entered the arena wearing the colours of Mexico. Jax, meanwhile, was booed after arriving in an outfit inspired by the American flag.
The challenger started strongly and dominated the early stages before the action moved outside the ring, where Lash Legend and Tiffany Stratton were also involved.
After the action returned inside, Jax missed an Annihilator, allowing Green to regain control. The champion then hit the Unprettier to secure the win and retain her title.
War Raiders retain AAA Tag Team Championships
The War Raiders successfully defended their AAA Tag Team Championships against R-Truth and Damian Priest.
However, the biggest development came after the match. Following the defeat, Priest turned heel and attacked Truth, laying his tag-team partner out in the ring.
The incident could mark a major change in Priest’s WWE storyline going forward.
Sami Zayn defeats CM Punk for Undisputed Championship
The main event saw Sami Zayn defeat CM Punk to win the WWE Undisputed Championship, marking the second WWE title of his career.
Both wrestlers walked out wearing colours inspired by Mexico, with Punk paying tribute to the host country while Zayn’s attire reflected his Syrian heritage.
Punk suffered a knee injury early in the match, and Zayn repeatedly targeted the injured leg. The contest also featured several interruptions, with Kevin Owens accidentally hitting Punk with the championship belt.
Zayn later hit Owens with a low blow before turning his attention back to Punk. He then delivered a Helluva Kick to the former champion to secure the victory and become the new WWE Undisputed Champion.
