281 matches. 9,218 runs. Nine centuries. Sixty-seven half-centuries. An average of 40.07 and a strike rate of 134.39. Those numbers alone highlight Virat Kohli’s extraordinary legacy in the Indian Premier League. Yet, despite his staggering consistency over nearly two decades, Kohli had to wait 18 years to finally lift the IPL trophy.

That long wait finally ended in 2025 when Kohli guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their maiden IPL title. Now, the defending champions stand just two wins away from retaining the crown.

RCB will face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2026 on Thursday, with a place in the final at stake. The winner will directly qualify for the summit clash scheduled for May 31 in Ahmedabad, while the losing side will get another chance through Qualifier 2.

Kohli has once again enjoyed a stellar season with the bat. In 14 innings, the opening batter has scored 557 runs at an impressive average of 50.63. More significantly, he has maintained a strike rate of 163.82 — the highest of his IPL career in a single season.

As the league’s all-time leading run-scorer, Kohli also holds the records for the most centuries and half-centuries in IPL history. Naturally, RCB’s hopes of reaching another final will once again rest heavily on their talisman batter.

However, one statistic continues to raise concern ahead of the playoffs.

Historically, Kohli’s numbers in IPL knockout matches — including semifinals and finals — have been below his usual lofty standards. In 17 playoff appearances, the 37-year-old has scored 396 runs at an average of 26.4, with two half-centuries and one duck.

While elite athletes rarely dwell on past numbers, Kohli will certainly be aware of his playoff record. As RCB chase back-to-back IPL titles, the former India captain will not only aim to lead from the front but also look to make a bigger impact in the tournament’s most decisive moments.
