Urvil Patel etched his name into the record books on Sunday after smashing the joint-fastest fifty in IPL history during Chennai Super Kings’ clash against Lucknow Super Giants at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk.
The explosive wicketkeeper-batter reached his half-century in just 13 deliveries, equalling the all-time IPL record. Batting at number three, Urvil hammered 65 runs off only 23 balls, smashing two fours and eight sixes at a stunning strike rate of 282.61.
It also turned out to be one of the most destructive innings in CSK history. In terms of strike rate, Urvil’s knock ranks second only to Suresh Raina’s iconic 87 off 25 balls against Punjab in IPL 2014.
Born on October 17, 1998, in Mehsana, Gujarat, Urvil represents Gujarat in domestic cricket and is known for his aggressive top-order batting. His cricketing journey has been deeply shaped by his parents, both educators, who made several sacrifices to support his career from a very young age.
His father, Mukesh Patel, a physical training teacher and former sprinter, played a major role in nurturing his sporting ambitions, while his mother regularly adjusted the family’s routine to ensure Urvil received proper coaching and training opportunities in Ahmedabad.
Urvil first grabbed national attention during the 2023 Vijay Hazare Trophy when he smashed a blistering unbeaten century off just 41 balls for Gujarat against Arunachal Pradesh. The innings became the second-fastest List A hundred by an Indian batter, only behind Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball century.
His performances earned him an IPL contract with Gujarat Titans in 2023, though he did not get a game that season. After continued success in domestic cricket, he eventually made his IPL breakthrough with CSK in 2025 and has now announced himself on the biggest stage with a record-equalling innings.
