India national cricket team kept their campaign alive in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a commanding 72-run victory over Zimbabwe national cricket team in Chennai on Thursday.
With the win, India opened their account in the Super 8 stage and set up a virtual quarter-final clash against West Indies national cricket team on Sunday in Kolkata.
Virtual Knockout in Kolkata
India and West Indies have identical records in the Super 8 stage — one win and one loss each — leaving both sides on two points from two matches. The winner on Sunday will move to four points and secure a place in the semi-finals.
However, with no reserve day for Super 8 fixtures, a washout would see the teams share points. In that scenario, both sides would finish with three points, and qualification would be decided by net run rate (NRR).
- West Indies NRR: +1.791
- India NRR: -0.100
If rain forces a no-result, West Indies would advance due to their superior NRR.
India’s Dominant Win
India’s comprehensive victory over Zimbabwe was powered by half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya. Pandya was named Player of the Match for his explosive knock.
Reflecting on his innings, Pandya said:
“Pretty happy. I mean, yeah, it sounds strange — 23-ball 50 — but I had to reassess the situation. I felt I was trying to hit too hard. During the game, I realised I could time the ball and still clear the ropes. It was important for me to continue the rhythm because in the last couple of games I couldn’t do what I wanted. So I’m really satisfied.”
Other Group Update
South Africa national cricket team have already sealed their semi-final berth, while Zimbabwe have been eliminated. South Africa will face Zimbabwe in their final Super 8 fixture in New Delhi on Sunday.
With everything riding on the Kolkata clash, India’s road to the semi-finals now hinges on one decisive encounter.
