Bangladesh’s newly appointed State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, has extended an olive branch to India, signalling his intent to resolve the “diplomatic complications” that led to Bangladesh’s absence from the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Haque, a former captain and goalkeeper of the Bangladesh national football team, took oath on Tuesday (February 17) following the landslide victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the recent state elections. Soon after assuming office, he indicated a clear shift in tone compared to the previous administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, under whom sports advisor Asif Nazrul had taken a more confrontational stance toward India.

Speaking after his swearing-in ceremony, as quoted by Cricbuzz, Haque revealed that he had already initiated dialogue with Indian officials.

“After attending the oath-taking ceremony today, I met with the Deputy High Commissioner of India at the Parliament building. I discussed this matter (T20 World Cup issue) with him. He was very friendly, and I also spoke to him in a friendly manner. I told him that we want to resolve this issue quickly through discussions because we want to maintain friendly relations with all our neighboring countries. From sports to all other sectors, we want to build a sincere and cordial relationship.”

How the T20 World Cup Dispute Escalated

The diplomatic fallout stemmed from tensions involving the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which reportedly directed the removal of Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL 2026 roster. The move allegedly triggered a breakdown in relations, with Bangladesh subsequently refusing to travel to India for the T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh officially cited “security concerns” — a claim the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected. Scotland was eventually named as their replacement in the tournament.

“You know that because of diplomatic complications, we could not play in the World Cup,” Haque said. “If those issues had been discussed and settled earlier, our team might have participated.”

Political and Regional Implications

The development could also ease broader political concerns in New Delhi, where there had been apprehension that Bangladesh was moving closer to Pakistan under the Yunus administration. Notably, Aminul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), had travelled to Lahore and publicly thanked Pakistan for its support during the standoff.

With Haque now at the helm of Bangladesh’s sports ministry, the tone appears to have shifted toward reconciliation. Whether talks translate into a full sporting reset between the neighbours remains to be seen, but the early signals point toward a renewed effort to rebuild trust — both on and off the field.
