Sanju Samson has reportedly emerged as the leading contender to become the next captain of the India men’s T20I team following his exceptional performances over the past few months.
According to reports, the BCCI selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar has been highly impressed with Samson’s consistency, temperament and leadership qualities in the shortest format.
Samson played a key role in India’s triumphant ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign and eventually won the Player of the Tournament award despite not being part of the playing XI in the initial matches. The team management, headed by Gautam Gambhir, had initially preferred Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan at the top of the order.
However, once recalled to the side, Samson made an immediate impact with an unbeaten 97 against the West Indies in a must-win match. He followed it up with crucial scores of 89 against both England and New Zealand in the knockout stages.
Reports further suggest that Samson could be handed the captaincy for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England after the conclusion of IPL 2026.
If the selectors opt against an immediate leadership change, current skipper Suryakumar Yadav may continue temporarily. However, his recent batting struggles have intensified discussions around a possible transition.
Suryakumar has endured a difficult IPL 2026 campaign, scoring just 195 runs in 10 matches at an average of 19.52. His underwhelming performances during the T20 World Cup, barring a notable innings against the USA, have further raised concerns.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer was also considered a strong leadership candidate. However, reports indicate that his absence from India’s T20I setup since December 2023 has weakened his chances. The selectors reportedly believe Iyer must first cement his place back in the squad before being considered for captaincy duties.
Samson’s impressive IPL 2026 season for Chennai Super Kings, where he has already crossed 400 runs with multiple centuries, along with his captaincy experience at Rajasthan Royals, has significantly strengthened his case to lead India in T20Is.
