New Zealand and Pakistan are set to clash on February 21 in their opening Super Eight fixture of the 2026 T20 World Cup, with both teams aiming to build early momentum in the second phase of the tournament. Each side progressed from the group stage with three wins in four matches, underlining their strong form heading into this crucial encounter.

The match also marks a step forward for both teams, who suffered group-stage exits in the previous 2024 edition and will now be eager to make a deeper run this time.

Head-to-Head Record

New Zealand and Pakistan share a closely fought rivalry in T20 internationals. In 49 meetings, Pakistan hold a slight edge with 24 wins, while New Zealand have secured 23 victories. Two matches ended without a result.

One of their most memorable encounters came in the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup, where Pakistan comfortably chased down 152, thanks to a dominant opening partnership between Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam, to seal a place in the final.

Key Performers in the Rivalry

Babar Azam has been Pakistan’s most consistent performer against New Zealand in T20Is. Between 2018 and 2024, he scored 880 runs in 26 matches at an average of 41.90, including a century and eight half-centuries. His unbeaten 101 remains his highest score against the Black Caps, while his 53 in the 2022 World Cup semi-final was pivotal in Pakistan’s successful chase.

With the ball, Shaheen Shah Afridi has been a major threat. Since 2018, the left-arm pacer has picked up 35 wickets in 25 matches against New Zealand, with best figures of 4/30. His knack for early breakthroughs and ability to shift momentum makes him a key figure in this contest.

Most Recent Meeting

In their latest encounter in Wellington, New Zealand delivered a dominant all-round performance. Pakistan were restricted to 128/9, with Jimmy Neesham claiming a five-wicket haul. The chase was emphatic, as New Zealand cruised to victory inside 10 overs without losing a wicket, powered by Tim Seifert’s explosive 97 off 38 balls.

With history, form, and stakes all aligned, the upcoming clash promises to be another tightly contested chapter in this evenly matched rivalry.
