Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 campaign ended in disappointment, and major changes could now be on the cards for the five-time champions. Reports suggest that Hardik Pandya may be removed as captain after MI finished ninth on the points table and extended their title drought to six consecutive seasons.

Hardik led Mumbai Indians in 10 matches during IPL 2026, with the team struggling for consistency throughout the tournament. Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah also captained the side in a few matches, but MI managed only four wins in 14 games overall.

According to reports, the franchise management is now considering a complete restructuring of the team, with the captaincy likely to be the first major decision. Hardik’s relationship with the Mumbai Indians setup has remained under scrutiny ever since he replaced Rohit Sharma as captain ahead of IPL 2024 after returning from Gujarat Titans.

The move had created significant backlash among fans, especially after Rohit had recently guided India to the ODI World Cup final. Since then, Mumbai Indians have struggled to regain their dominance, finishing at the bottom in 2024, showing brief improvement in 2025, before another disappointing season in 2026.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya’s recent social media activity has also fuelled speculation about a possible move away from the franchise. Fans noticed an Instagram story posted by the all-rounder featuring the time “07:07”, which many linked to Chennai Super Kings icon MS Dhoni and his iconic jersey number 7. The post quickly sparked rumours about a possible trade involving Pandya.

If Mumbai Indians decide to replace Hardik as captain, the franchise may have to look at younger long-term options. Rohit Sharma, now 39, is unlikely to return as captain, while Suryakumar Yadav’s recent form may work against him in leadership discussions. Young batter Tilak Varma is reportedly emerging as a strong candidate due to his age and long-term potential. Jasprit Bumrah also remains an option, although his workload and fitness management could be a concern.

The coming months are expected to be crucial for Mumbai Indians as the franchise looks to rebuild after another disappointing IPL season.
