A wave of shock and silence gripped the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, April 25, during the IPL 2026 clash between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, after a frightening on-field incident involving Lungi Ngidi.

What began as a high-scoring contest took a serious turn in the third over of the PBKS chase. Off the third ball bowled by Axar Patel, opener Priyansh Arya miscued a lofted drive that went high towards mid-off. Ngidi, backpedalling to complete the catch, misjudged the trajectory on the hard Delhi outfield. In his attempt to recover, he lost balance and fell heavily, striking the back of his head on the ground.

The impact was immediate and alarming. Ngidi lay motionless for a few moments, prompting players from both teams to rush to his aid. The stadium, which had been buzzing after KL Rahul’s record-breaking 152*, fell eerily silent as the seriousness of the situation became clear.

Medical staff from Delhi Capitals, along with the tournament doctor, quickly attended to the pacer. In a rare and concerning sight, an ambulance was driven onto the field and a stretcher brought out. A neck brace was carefully applied as a precaution against potential spinal or concussion-related injuries.

Fellow South African players David Miller and Tristan Stubbs appeared visibly shaken as they stood nearby, while Ricky Ponting, head coach of Punjab Kings, also came onto the field to check on Ngidi. Initial reports suggested that the pacer was responsive during preliminary assessments, but he was taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.

After a lengthy delay, play eventually resumed, with Dushmantha Chameera bowling briefly before Vipraj Nigam was introduced as a concussion substitute. However, the mood remained subdued following the incident.

Earlier in the match, Delhi Capitals had posted a massive 264/2, powered by Rahul’s historic knock—the highest score by an Indian in IPL history. But the evening’s focus quickly shifted from records to concern for Ngidi’s well-being.

There has been no official update yet from Delhi Capitals on Ngidi’s condition. He is expected to undergo scans and remain under close medical observation. The cricketing world now waits anxiously, hoping for positive news about the Proteas fast bowler.
