The ownership structure of Rajasthan Royals could soon undergo a major change, with global investment bank The Raine Group overseeing a potential stake sale in the franchise. Discussions are reportedly taking place at a floor valuation of around $1.1 billion, underlining the immense financial strength of the Indian Premier League ecosystem.

According to reports, key stakeholders involved in the process are expected to meet on Monday, March 16, to discuss the next phase of the sale.

Current Ownership Structure of Rajasthan Royals

The franchise is currently led by venture capitalist Manoj Badale through Emerging Media Ventures.

The present ownership structure is as follows:

  • Manoj Badale / Emerging Media Ventures – 65%
  • RedBird Capital Partners – 15%
  • Lachlan Murdoch – 13%
  • Minority stakeholders including Ian McKinnon, Kal Somani, Simer Mayo, and Mihir Patel – 7%

Four Bidders Shortlisted

Reports suggest that four groups have been shortlisted following the evaluation process.

The potential bidders include:

  • A consortium led by Aditya Birla Group and investor David Blitzer
  • A group led by Satyan Gajwani
  • A consortium involving Kal Somani and former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi
  • A group led by Adar Poonawalla

Interestingly, some of these investors are also reportedly monitoring the potential sale of Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

IPL’s Growing Financial Power

Over the past decade, the IPL has evolved into one of the most valuable sports leagues in the world. Only the National Football League in the United States clearly surpasses it in overall commercial value.

A major contributor to this growth has been the league’s lucrative media rights deals. The broadcast and digital rights for the 2023–2027 cycle were sold for approximately $6.2 billion, significantly boosting the league’s global profile and financial strength.

Birla–Blitzer Consortium and Gajwani Among Key Contenders

According to reports, the Aditya Birla Group has partnered with David Blitzer’s investment group to submit a binding bid for a stake in Rajasthan Royals. Blitzer already holds investments in several football and basketball teams across the world.

Another strong contender is Satyan Gajwani, who has steadily expanded his footprint in global cricket investments. He owns a 49% stake in London Spirit through a consortium led by Nikesh Arora. Gajwani is also among the founding investors behind Major League Cricket in the United States.

Meanwhile, entrepreneur Kal Somani, based in Scottsdale, Arizona, has remained closely associated with the Rajasthan Royals setup since acquiring a minority stake in the franchise in 2021.
