KKR Eye KL Rahul as Captaincy Candidate in Bold ₹25-Crore Move?

After a disappointing 8th-place finish in 2025, KKR finds itself at a crossroads. Their glorious 2024 title win under Shreyas Iyer feels like a distant memory

The IPL 2025 season is barely in the rearview mirror, but the off-field chess moves have already begun. Franchises are reworking game plans, shuffling coaching staff, and quietly chasing big names for 2026. And one rumour is dominating the chatter: KL Rahul to Kolkata Knight Riders.

After a disappointing 8th-place finish in 2025, KKR finds itself at a crossroads. Their glorious 2024 title win under Shreyas Iyer feels like a distant memory. In the wake of a forgettable season, changes have already begun – head coach Chandrakant Pandit and bowling coach Bharat Arun have been relieved of their duties. But it’s the player market where things could really get interesting.

According to The Times of India’s, KKR is eyeing Rahul not just as a star signing, but as a potential captain. The 32-year-old is currently with Delhi Capitals, who bought him for ₹14 crore at the 2025 auction. However, early trade offers from KKR – including a swap involving Venkatesh Iyer – have reportedly failed to sway Delhi.

Now, KKR is said to be preparing a cash-heavy ₹25 crore offer to make the deal happen. It’s a bold move that would require some major squad and budget rejigging.

Venkatesh Iyer, re-signed by KKR last season for a staggering ₹23.75 crore, endured a forgettable campaign, scoring just 142 runs in 11 matches. While KKR hoped to use him as part of the swap for Rahul, Delhi appears uninterested in the current trade assets on offer. That leaves an all-cash deal as the most likely route – a rare but not unprecedented move in IPL history.

Why KL Rahul?
For one, KKR needs a long-term leader. Since Shreyas Iyer’s exit, the role has been in flux, with Ajinkya Rahane unable to stamp his authority. Rahul brings three seasons of captaincy experience from Lucknow Super Giants, plus a reputation for calm, tactical leadership.

Then there’s his batting. Since 2018, Rahul has been among the IPL’s most consistent run-scorers – topping 600 runs in four seasons and 500+ in three others. As an opener who can also keep wickets, he offers KKR the added benefit of freeing up an overseas slot, possibly replacing Quinton de Kock.

If the move materialises, it would signal more than a marquee signing – it would mark the start of a full-scale KKR rebuild. After a season to forget, the management seems determined to strip things back and construct a squad around a proven leader.

Whether Delhi can be persuaded is another story. It will take either a blockbuster player swap or a pure cash deal to bring Rahul to Eden Gardens. But if KKR pulls it off, the sight of KL Rahul walking out to captain the Knights under the lights in Kolkata could be one of IPL 2026’s defining images.

For now, it’s just rumour season. But in the IPL, that’s when the real drama begins.
