The England national cricket team has been forced into an unexpected captaincy change ahead of the second Test against New Zealand at The Kia Oval, with Joe Root set to lead the side after regular skipper Ben Stokes was ruled out amid an ongoing disciplinary investigation.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that both Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have been omitted from the 15-man squad as an investigation into an alleged breach of team protocols continues.
The inquiry stems from an incident at a nightclub in Chelsea, London, during the early hours of Monday morning, just hours after England celebrated their victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s. While the ECB has not disclosed full details of the incident, it stated that both players will remain unavailable for selection for the second Test until the investigation is concluded.
With Stokes sidelined, England were forced to appoint a stand-in captain for the Oval Test. Although Harry Brook is the designated vice-captain, selectors have opted for the vastly experienced Joe Root to take charge on an interim basis.
Root is no stranger to the role, having captained England in a record 64 Test matches between 2017 and 2022 before handing over the leadership duties to Stokes.
The absence of Stokes and Atkinson has also resulted in changes to the squad, with fast bowler Jofra Archer earning a recall, while batter Jordan Cox has also been included in the 15-man group as England look to maintain their momentum in the series.
The latest development adds to a growing list of off-field controversies involving the national side. Earlier this year, Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell came under scrutiny following an alleged curfew breach during England’s tour of Australia. The pair were reportedly investigated for partying and being intoxicated during the team’s stay in Noosa. The incident occurred shortly after England suffered consecutive heavy defeats to Australia during last year’s Ashes series.
England Test squad:
Joe Root (capt), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, James Rew, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith (wk), Josh Tongue.
