Widely regarded as “Captain Cool,” MS Dhoni is celebrated for his composure, tactical brilliance, and unmatched leadership. The former India captain remains the only skipper in cricket history to win all three ICC white-ball trophies—the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

With more than 17,000 international runs, over 800 dismissals as a wicketkeeper, and five IPL titles as Chennai Super Kings captain, Dhoni has built a legacy that few can match. Yet, despite his trademark calmness, there have been a handful of occasions when even the legendary wicketkeeper-batter couldn’t hide his emotions.

As Dhoni celebrates his 45th birthday on July 7, 2026, here’s a look at five rare instances when the “Captain Cool” lost his cool.

1. Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana – IPL 2025

During Chennai Super Kings’ final league-stage clash against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, stand-in skipper MS Dhoni was visibly frustrated after Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana appeared to ignore his field-setting instructions. Dhoni was seen animatedly gesturing towards the duo, with the moment quickly going viral as one of his rare emotional reactions on the field.

2. Walking onto the Field Against Rajasthan Royals – IPL 2019

Perhaps Dhoni’s most famous display of anger came during an IPL clash against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. A waist-high full toss was initially signalled as a no-ball before the decision was overturned, prompting Dhoni to walk onto the field and confront umpires Ulhas Gandhe and Bruce Oxenford. The CSK skipper was later fined 50% of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.

3. Frustration at Manish Pandey – India vs South Africa, T20I

In a T20I against South Africa, Dhoni was visibly annoyed with Manish Pandey after his batting partner failed to respond for a possible second run during the chase. Although the pair stitched together an unbeaten 98-run partnership to guide India home, Dhoni’s frustration during the tense finish was evident.

4. Collision with Mustafizur Rahman – India vs Bangladesh, 2015

One of Dhoni’s most controversial moments came during an ODI against Bangladesh when he collided with debutant pacer Mustafizur Rahman while completing a run. The incident sparked widespread debate, with Dhoni later fined 75% of his match fee for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct. Mustafizur was also sanctioned for obstructing the batter.

5. Confronting Billy Bowden – CB Series Against Australia

During the CB Series in Australia, Dhoni confronted umpire Billy Bowden after confusion surrounding a DRS decision involving Michael Hussey. A technical error on the stadium’s giant screen led to the misunderstanding, resulting in one of the Indian captain’s rare public displays of frustration.

Despite these isolated incidents, Dhoni’s reputation as one of cricket’s calmest leaders remains intact. His ability to absorb pressure, make clear-headed decisions, and inspire his teammates is what truly defines his legendary career, making these rare flashes of emotion all the more memorable.
