India suffered a crushing 76-run defeat to South Africa in their opening Super 8 fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday (February 22). Chasing 188 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India were bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs.
The loss to Aiden Markram’s South Africa has significantly dented India’s semi-final hopes. To stay in contention, Suryakumar Yadav and his men must now register convincing wins against Zimbabwe and West Indies in their remaining Super 8 matches.
India will face Zimbabwe on February 26 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, before taking on West Indies on March 1 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. With their net run rate taking a heavy hit, even one more defeat could end India’s title defence at the Super 8 stage.
The batting collapse against South Africa exposed major concerns. Ishan Kishan was dismissed for a four-ball duck, while Tilak Varma managed just one run before falling to Marco Jansen. Abhishek Sharma scored 15 off 12 balls before being caught in a sharp effort by Corbin Bosch, despite a collision with Keshav Maharaj.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav, Washington Sundar and Hardik Pandya got starts but failed to convert them into meaningful contributions. Jansen was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 4 for 22 in 3.5 overs, while Maharaj also struck three crucial blows to seal a comprehensive victory for the Proteas.
