Sri Lanka could get the opportunity to play a home semi-final in the 2026 T20 World Cup if they qualify, depending on other results in the Super 8 stage.
In a communication sent to stakeholders after the Super 8 line-up was confirmed, the International Cricket Council clarified that Semi-final 1 will remain a floating fixture, to be held either in Colombo or Kolkata based on which teams advance.
According to the updated logistics:
- If Pakistan national cricket team qualify for the semi-finals, they will play Semi-final 1 in Colombo on March 4.
- If Pakistan do not qualify, but Sri Lanka do — and they are not drawn against India — then Sri Lanka will play Semi-final 1 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
- If neither Pakistan nor Sri Lanka qualify, Semi-final 1 will be held in Kolkata and Semi-final 2 in Mumbai.
The ICC also confirmed that India national cricket team will play their semi-final in Mumbai if they qualify — unless they face Pakistan, in which case the match will be shifted to Colombo.
Importantly, Sri Lanka and Pakistan are both part of Group 2 in the Super 8 stage, meaning they cannot meet in a semi-final.
This clarification appears to expand upon the original schedule announced in November. Earlier communication only detailed provisions for Pakistan’s potential semi-final and final being moved to Colombo, with no explicit mention of Sri Lanka hosting a knockout fixture.
The playing conditions document also did not clearly outline a scenario allowing Sri Lanka a home semi-final, prompting the ICC to issue further clarification.
