Zimbabwe created history after stunning Australia by 23 runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 match in Colombo. This marked only the second time Zimbabwe have defeated Australia in a T20 World Cup. Their first such win came in the inaugural edition in 2007.
They had also famously beaten Australia in the 1983 ODI World Cup. Interestingly, both those World Cups were eventually won by India — a coincidence that has made Indian fans hopeful of another title triumph at home.
Zimbabwe vs Australia – 1983 ODI World Cup
The match was played in Nottingham during the 1983 World Cup. Zimbabwe batted first and posted 239/6 in 60 overs. Captain Duncan Fletcher led from the front with an unbeaten 69 off 84 balls, while Iain Butchart contributed 34* off 38.
Fletcher then delivered with the ball as well, picking up 4/42 in 11 overs to seal a memorable win. Despite half-centuries from Kepler Wessels and Rod Marsh, Australia were restricted to 226/7, handing Zimbabwe a 13-run victory.
That edition of the World Cup was famously won by India national cricket team, led by Kapil Dev, who defeated the West Indies in the final to lift their maiden title.
Zimbabwe vs Australia – 2007 T20 World Cup
Zimbabwe once again shocked Australia in the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa. Brilliant spells from Elton Chigumbura (3/20 in 3 overs) and Gary Brent (2/19 in 4 overs) helped restrict Australia to 138/9 in 20 overs.
In reply, Brendan Taylor scored a crucial unbeaten 60 off 45 balls, while Hamilton Masakadza chipped in with 27 off 28. Zimbabwe needed four runs from two balls when the penultimate delivery went for four leg byes, sealing a dramatic five-wicket win with one ball to spare.
The 2007 T20 World Cup was eventually won by India national cricket team, under the leadership of MS Dhoni, who defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the final.
That triumph was especially significant as India had endured a disappointing ODI World Cup campaign earlier that year, crashing out in the group stage after defeats to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The T20 title restored pride and sparked a new era in Indian cricket.
With Zimbabwe once again upsetting Australia in a World Cup, Indian fans are hoping history repeats itself — and that the Men in Blue go on to lift the trophy once more.
