Bowlers dictating terms in a format usually dominated by power-hitters is rare, but that was the story at Chepauk on Sunday as Gujarat Titans produced a clinical all-round performance to outclass Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets in IPL 2026.

On a surface offering sharp bounce and carry, GT’s bowlers set the tone early, restricting CSK to 158/7 before Sai Sudharsan’s composed brilliance sealed a comfortable chase. The left-hander struck a superb 87 off 46 balls, showcasing the perfect balance between caution and aggression to guide the Titans home with 20 balls to spare.

The win propelled Gujarat Titans from seventh to fifth on the points table with eight points.

Sudharsan anchors a commanding chase

Chasing 159 on a tricky surface, Sudharsan delivered a masterclass in reading conditions. He picked his moments to attack, particularly against the pacers, and finished with seven sixes in an innings that stood out for its control and maturity.

He was well supported by skipper Shubman Gill, who contributed a fluent 33 off 23 balls. The opening duo added 58 runs in the Powerplay, effectively putting GT in control early. Even after Gill’s dismissal to Noor Ahmad, Sudharsan ensured there were no hiccups.

Jos Buttler provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 39 off 30 balls as GT cruised to the target at 154/1.

CSK struggle to adapt to conditions

Earlier, CSK’s innings never quite found momentum on a pitch that demanded discipline. Their batters struggled to adjust to the bounce, often opting for high-risk strokes, resulting in a series of mistimed dismissals.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad stood out with a resilient 74* off 60 balls, anchoring the innings after early setbacks. However, his cautious approach, forced by the situation, meant CSK couldn’t accelerate when needed.

The collapse was triggered early by GT’s pace attack. Mohammed Siraj used the bounce effectively, while Kagiso Rabada (3/25) struck crucial blows, including the wickets of Sanju Samson and Urvil Patel in the same over. Sarfaraz Khan also fell cheaply as CSK slipped to 28/3 in the Powerplay.

Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, and others failed to convert starts, with poor shot selection costing them dearly. Despite late contributions from Kartik Sharma and Jamie Overton, CSK fell short of a competitive total on a pitch where 160 was always going to be tricky.

Titans execute to perfection

Gujarat Titans’ bowlers were disciplined and clear in their plans, exploiting the conditions far better than their opponents. In contrast, CSK’s inability to adapt proved costly.

Ultimately, it was a game defined by smarter cricket — GT assessed the surface quickly, executed their strategies effectively, and were rewarded with a dominant victory.
