From Nayudu to Pant: Grit and Glory in Cricket’s Pain-Defying Tales

Rishabh Pant’s gritty return to the crease despite a serious foot injury in the Test against England drew admiration from fans and experts alike. His determination evoked memories of some of cricket’s most iconic moments, when players refused to bow to pain and fought on for their team.

Cricket’s history is dotted with such tales of courage — instances where sheer willpower triumphed over physical agony. One of the most celebrated examples dates back to the 1952 Ranji Trophy final. India’s first-ever Test captain, CK Nayudu, was facing the fiery pace of Dattu Phadkar when a sharp bouncer struck him squarely on the face. The blow was so fierce it knocked out one of his teeth.

But instead of grimacing or seeking medical attention, Nayudu’s reaction became the stuff of legend. He calmly pulled out his handkerchief, bent down, picked up the fallen tooth, slipped it into his pocket, and signalled for play to continue. No theatrics, no complaints — just an unflinching focus on the game. He went on to score over 60 runs, an innings now remembered as much for its grit as for the runs themselves.

Moments like these — from Nayudu’s stoic stand in 1952 to Pant’s brave return in 2025 — underline a truth every cricket lover knows: sometimes, the most enduring scores in the game aren’t written on the scoreboard, but in the hearts of those who witness such acts of defiance.
