Bangladesh scripted history on Wednesday by completing their first-ever Test series clean sweep over Pakistan after sealing a 78-run victory in the second Test in Sylhet.
The win marked Bangladesh’s second victory of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle and helped them climb above India in the latest WTC standings. With two wins, one defeat and one draw so far, Bangladesh improved their points percentage (PCT) to 58.33 and moved up to fifth place.
India, led by Shubman Gill, slipped to sixth with a PCT of 48.15. The Indian side will have a chance to improve its standing during the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka later this year. India are also scheduled to face Afghanistan in a one-off Test from June 6, although that fixture is not part of the WTC cycle.
Former champions Australia continue to lead the standings with a PCT of 87.50, followed by New Zealand at 77.78, while defending champions South Africa occupy third place with 75.
Historic moment for Bangladesh cricket
For the first time in their Test history, Bangladesh have completed a clean sweep over Pakistan in a Test series. After winning the opening Test in Dhaka by 104 runs, they wrapped up the series with another dominant performance in Sylhet.
Chasing a massive target of 437, Pakistan’s hopes largely rested on Mohammad Rizwan, who played a fighting knock of 94. However, his dismissal proved to be the turning point as Bangladesh quickly wrapped up the innings. Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam starred with figures of 6/120 as Pakistan were bowled out for 358 in 97.2 overs.
Bangladesh will next travel to Australia for a two-match Test series in August before hosting South Africa for another two-Test assignment in November.
Pakistan, meanwhile, are set to tour the Caribbean for a two-match Test series against the West Indies in July before taking on England in a three-match Test series later this year.
