Chennai Super Kings (CSK) allrounder R Ashwin has sought clarity from the franchise on their plans for him in the upcoming IPL season, ESPNcricinfo understands. According to sources, Ashwin has indicated that he is open to parting ways if he is not part of CSK’s future plans.
The veteran spinner, bought for ₹9.75 crore at the 2025 mega auction, featured in only nine of CSK’s 14 matches this season — his lowest appearance tally since his debut year in 2009. It was also a tough season statistically, with Ashwin conceding at 9.12 runs per over — his most expensive IPL campaign to date.
Ashwin’s return to CSK in 2025 was billed as a homecoming after eight years away, having previously represented Rising Pune Supergiant, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals. The 38-year-old is the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history.
The timeline for player retentions and releases hinges on the yet-to-be-finalised date of the IPL 2026 auction. While mega auctions occur every three years, mini auctions are held annually, usually between November and February. Player trades, if any, must be completed at least a week before the auction.
Speaking on his YouTube show, Ashwin explained his stance:
“Every player seeks clarity. After every season, it’s the responsibility of the franchise to communicate whether they’re retaining or releasing him. I’ve simply asked for clarity. The rumours floating around — whether about me or Sanju [Samson] — aren’t coming from the players.”
CSK also face other big decisions, notably around captaincy. MS Dhoni took charge mid-season after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury. While Gaikwad was named captain at the start of 2025 despite Dhoni’s presence, the franchise traditionally waits for Dhoni’s own update on his availability later in the year before finalising leadership plans.
