Before he became the King of Cricket, Virat Kohli was just a passionate kid from Delhi with big dreams, fierce determination, and a bat that never left his hands. Here are 7 fascinating facts about his early life that even die-hard fans might not know!

1. He Picked Up a Bat at Just 3 Years Old

According to his family, little Virat used to swing a toy bat around the house, imitating TV cricketers. His father noticed his obsession early and enrolled him in a cricket academy by age nine.

2. His Nickname Was ‘Cheeku’ — Given by a Delhi Coach

The nickname Cheeku came from his childhood coach at the West Delhi Cricket Academy, Ajit Chaudhary, who thought Kohli resembled a comic book character with the same name. The name stuck — and even MS Dhoni still calls him that!

3. He Played Through Tragedy — The Day After His Father’s Death

At just 18, while playing a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi, Kohli’s father passed away overnight. Instead of leaving, Virat chose to bat the next morning, scoring a gritty 90 to save his team. That day, he says, changed his life forever.

4. He Wasn’t Always a Fitness Freak

Believe it or not, young Kohli loved butter chicken, chhole bhature, and cold drinks. His famous fitness transformation came later, when he realized he needed to match global standards to succeed at the international level.

5. He Was a Top Student Too

Though cricket dominated his life early on, Kohli was known as a sharp and disciplined student. Teachers at Vishal Bharti Public School often said he balanced studies and sports better than most kids his age.

6. He Captained India to a World Cup Win at Just 19

Before taking over as India’s captain, Kohli led the U-19 team to World Cup glory in 2008. His leadership and fierce attitude in Malaysia hinted at what was to come in international cricket.

7. His Family Once Considered Moving Away from Cricket

After years of struggle and limited financial support, Kohli’s family briefly thought about asking him to focus on academics instead. But his father’s belief and his own unshakable passion kept him going — and the rest is history.
