Cricket has often claimed to be above politics, but history tells a different story. Time and again, political pressure, diplomatic tensions, and government intervention have influenced major cricketing decisions — sometimes altering the sport’s biggest moments. Here are five instances when cricket boards took political calls that sent shockwaves through the game.

1. Pakistan Cancelled Their 1991 Test Tour of India

In 1991, Pakistan were scheduled to tour India for a five-Test series, a tour that had generated massive excitement across the subcontinent. However, rising political tensions and security concerns — particularly around the Kashmir issue — forced Pakistan to pull out at the last moment.
The cancellation deprived fans of what could have been a historic series and highlighted how fragile cricketing ties between the two nations had become.

2. South Africa’s Isolation During the Apartheid Era

Perhaps the most significant political intervention in cricket history, South Africa were banned from international cricket from 1970 to 1991 due to the country’s apartheid policy.
Cricket boards worldwide refused to engage with South Africa, leading to the loss of an entire generation of elite cricketers. While morally justified, the ban dramatically reshaped world cricket for over two decades.

3. India-Pakistan Bilateral Cricket Frozen Since 2012

Since Pakistan’s limited-overs tour of India in 2012–13, the two nations have not played a bilateral series. Political tensions and lack of government clearance on both sides have kept the rivalry restricted to ICC and continental tournaments only.
What was once cricket’s most frequent rivalry has now become an occasional spectacle, heavily controlled by political approval.

4. Zimbabwe Cricket’s Political Interference Crisis

Zimbabwe Cricket has repeatedly faced turmoil due to political involvement in its administration. Government interference led to international sanctions, player strikes, and the resignation of several senior cricketers.
The instability pushed Zimbabwe to the fringes of international cricket, despite once being a competitive force in the early 2000s.

5. 2026 T20 World Cup Boycott Threats and Withdrawals

Ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, political tensions resurfaced once again when teams threatened to boycott matches or withdraw due to security and diplomatic concerns. Bangladesh’s removal and Pakistan’s uncertainty over participation sparked debates about fairness, revenue loss, and the ICC’s authority.
The episode served as a reminder that even global tournaments are not immune to geopolitical pressures.
