Star wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson could miss out on India’s squad for the upcoming Asian Games, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly considering changes to the team just two months before the continental event, according to a report by The Times of India.

Samson’s place in the side has come under scrutiny following another lean run with the bat. After being dropped from India’s playing XI for the second T20I against England, he was also left out of the squad for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe.

The Kerala batter has endured a disappointing tour of Ireland and England, scoring just six runs in three matches. His struggles prompted the team management to hand 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his India debut in the second T20I against England.

While there remains uncertainty over whether Samson has been dropped or merely rested, his immediate future in India’s white-ball setup appears uncertain.

The report states that although India announced their Asian Games squad in June, the BCCI is exploring the possibility of making last-minute alterations. The governing body is believed to have approached, or is set to approach, the relevant authorities, as tournament regulations permit changes to the squad under exceptional circumstances, including the inclusion of players who were not part of the original list.

Samson’s inconsistent form, which first surfaced during IPL 2026 and has continued in international cricket, has further weakened his case for selection.

Adding to the competition is the sensational rise of teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose performances have strengthened his claim for a regular place in the Indian side. Ahead of the second T20I against England, head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen in an animated discussion with Samson shortly before Sooryavanshi received his India cap.

Samson’s replacement in the squad, Prabhsimran Singh, has also strengthened his credentials. The Punjab Kings wicketkeeper-batter enjoyed an outstanding IPL 2026 campaign and already has experience representing India at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, making him a strong contender if the selectors decide to persist with him.
